How to Choose and Identify the Perfect Ratnagiri Alphonso

Because the Ratnagiri Alphonso commands a premium price, the market is flooded with counterfeits. Vendors often mix cheaper varieties originating from Karnataka or Gujarat and falsely label them as Ratnagiri Hapus.

If you are paying for the King of Mangoes, you deserve the real thing. Here is your definitive guide to identifying an authentic Aam Native Ratnagiri Alphonso.

1. The Aroma Test (The Ultimate Giveaway)

An authentic Ratnagiri Alphonso announces its presence before you even see it. A genuine box of our mangoes will fill an entire room with a sweet, enchanting, tropical fragrance.

Fake Alphonso mangoes (or chemically ripened ones) have almost no smell, or they only smell faintly when you hold them directly to your nose. If you don't smell it from a few feet away, it’s not the real deal.

2. Visual Cues: The Golden-Saffron Gradient

Look closely at the skin of the mango.

  • Authentic: A naturally ripened Ratnagiri Alphonso has a gradient of yellow, golden, and often a beautiful saffron hue at the top near the stem. The skin will be incredibly thin and delicate.
  • Fake/Chemically Ripened: Counterfeits often look too perfect. They have a uniform, bright, unnatural lemon-yellow color without any gradient.

3. The Shape and Weight

The shape of a true Alphonso is distinct. It is oval, slightly oblique, and feels heavy for its size. The top end (near the stem) is slightly broader, tapering down to a rounded curve. It should never look long and pointy like a Totapuri.

Why Trust Aam Native?

At Aam Native, we take the guesswork out of buying mangoes. We hold the prestigious GI (Geographical Indication) Application No. 33, which guarantees that every single mango in our box was grown in the authentic, designated Ratnagiri geographic belt.

We cut out the middlemen entirely. Our mangoes travel directly from our historic farms to your doorstep, ensuring you never have to worry about counterfeits.
